Deborah van den Hoonaard (St Thomas University, Fredericton, Canada) corresponding editor, Anne Martin-Matthews (University of British Columbia, Canada) and Kate Davidson (University of Surrey, UK) are editing a special issue of JAS for publication in 2013—the 10th anniversary of Helena Znaniecka Lopata’s death--celebrating her work on widowhood.
This special issue of the Journal of Aging Studies welcomes scholarship from a variety of perspectives on widowhood, including international, cross-cultural and gender differences. We invite articles from the social and behavioural sciences, the humanities, and health and cultural studies, using diverse research concepts and methods. We especially welcome submissions that engage the ideas of Helena Z. Lopata.
This special issue will be a landmark publication that will both celebrate Helena’s ground-breaking scholarship on widowhood and provide an over-arching perspective for our own research interests in widowhood.

The Journal of Aging Studies features scholarly papers offering new interpretations that challenge existing theory and empirical work. The journal emphasizes innovations and critique - new directions in general - regardless of theoretical or methodological orientation or academic discipline. Critical, empirical, or theoretical contributions are welcome.
